Adrienne Faye Smith Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Adrienne Faye (McLeod) Smith, age 89, of Pickford, Michigan, passed away at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan, on May 30, 2022. She was born in Hessel, Michigan, on March 31, 1933, to Lyle William and Margaret Mary (Mertaugh) McLeod. Adrienne grew up in Hessel, attending Hessel School and graduating from Cedarville High School. She worked for a year as a nanny in Evanston, Illinois, and later worked as an operator for Michigan Bell Telephone in St. Ignace, Michigan. She met William J “Jay” Smith on a blind date, and they were married on October 12, 1957, at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Hessel. They started a family and she transitioned to a new career as a homemaker. She was very family oriented and loved to spend time with her growing family. Adrienne enjoyed needlework and knitting, donating many sets of mittens to area children. Other interests included working jigsaw and word-search puzzles, bird watching, listening to music, and reading. She loved growing houseplants and had them throughout her home. She liked her Red Wings and Tigers. Adrienne is survived by her sons, Lawrence M. (Tammy) Smith of Flower Mound, Texas, William H. Smith of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Mark C. (Michele) Smith of Harbor Springs, Michigan; and daughter, Gwendolyn M. (Keith) La Joie of Sault Ste. Marie. She adored her grandchildren, Nicholas (Caitlin) Smith, Stephanie Smith, Kirstan La Joie, Collin La Joie, and Miranda Smith; also great-grandchildren, Owen and Charlotte Smith. She is also survived by her sisters, MaryAnn Carr of Cedarville and Angela (Jack) Porco of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; sisters-in-law, Marilyn McLeod of Hessel, Mary Hessel of Pellston, Michigan, and Gloria Smith of Pickford; brother-in-law, Donald “Pete” (Evelyn) Smith of Petersburg, Michigan; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Adrienne is preceded in death by her parents; husband, “Jay” Smith; brothers, William (Doris) McLeod, Francis “Geet” McLeod, Thomas McLeod, and Michael McLeod; sister, Jane Hobbs; and brothers-in-law, Ernest “Bud” Carr, Harry Smith, C. Edward Hessel, Albert (Mayme) Smith, Wilson Smith, Lyle (Ann) Smith, F. Elwin (Jane) Smith, John (Flora) Smith, Dewey (Greta) Smith, and Franklin (Marcie) Smith. A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday June 9, at Galer Funeral Homes & Cremation in Pickford, Michigan, from 10:30 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. A private service will follow for the family, with internment at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.
